The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition activity the entire family will enjoy. Based on the tradition Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. During the holiday season, the elf watches children by day and reports to Santa each night. When children awake, the elf has returned from the North Pole and can be found hiding in a different location. This activity allows The Elf on the Shelf to become a delightful hide-and-seek game.  Each Elf is named by the family, who also gives the Elf a birth date.  Each year, the Elf appears on his birthday (usually around decorating time) and returns to the North Pole Christmas Eve.  Activities on the official website allow the child(ren) to visit the North Pole with additional activities.
However, it is the family interaction which makes this a special addition to your family for generations to come!

Each Tradition-in-a-Box comes with its very own scout elf, a hard-bound children's book and a keepsake box for easy storage.

On Christmas Eve—the most magical night in the North Pole—Santa’s sleigh needs Christmas spirit to make it soar on the long flight around the world.

Elf Pets™ are special North Pole animals you can adopt and love. Sent straight from the North Pole, each Elf Pet comes with a special storybook and instructions for adopting your pet friend. A magical heart charm hangs around the neck of each reindeer, and collects Christmas spirit throughout the year. Every time you care for your reindeer pet — every time you hug it and love it, talk to it and play with it—the reindeer’s heart charm fills with more Christmas spirit. On Christmas Eve, that full heart will help Santa’s sleigh fly
